Berlin is the  capital  and the largest city of  Germany, as well as one of its 16 constituent  states. With a steadily growing population of approximately 3.7 million, [4]  Berlin is the  second most populous city proper  in the  European Union  behind  London  and the seventh  most populous urban area in the European Union. [5]  Located in northeastern Germany on the banks of the rivers  Spree  and  Havel, it is the centre of the  Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has roughly 6 million residents. [6] [7] [8] [9]  Due to its location in the  European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a  temperate  seasonal climate. Around one-third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals and lakes. [10]

First documented in the 13th century and situated at the crossing of two important historic  trade routes, [11]  Berlin became the capital of the  Margraviate of Brandenburg  (14171701), the  Kingdom of Prussia  (17011918), the  German Empire  (18711918), the  Weimar Republic  (19191933), and the  Third Reich  (19331945). [12]  Berlin in the 1920s  was the third largest municipality in the world. [13]  After  World War II  and its subsequent occupation by the victorious countries, the city was divided;  West Berlin  became a de facto  West German  exclave, surrounded by the  Berlin Wall  (19611989) and East German territory. [14]  East Berlin was declared capital of  East Germany, while  Bonn became the West German capital. Following  German reunification  in 1990, Berlin once again became the capital of all of Germany.

Berlin is a  world city  of culture, politics, media and science. [15] [16] [17] [18]  Its economy is based on  high-tech  firms and the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of  creative industries, research facilities, media corporations and convention venues. [19] [20]  Berlin serves as a continental hub for air and rail traffic and has a highly complex public transportation network. The metropolis is a popular  tourist destination. [21]  Significant industries also include  IT, pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, clean tech,  biotechnology, construction and electronics.

Berlin is home to world-renowned universities, orchestras, museums, and entertainment venues, and is host to many sporting events. [22]  Its  Zoological Garden is the most visited zoo in Europe and one of the most popular worldwide. With the  world's oldest large-scale movie studio complex, Berlin is an increasingly popular location for international  film productions. [23]  The city is well known for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and a  very high quality of living. [24]  Since the 2000s Berlin has seen the emergence of a cosmopolitan  entrepreneurial  scene. [25]

Beryl (n.) (Min.) 【礦】綠寶石 A mineral of great hardness, and, when transparent, of much beauty. It occurs in hexagonal prisms, commonly of a green or bluish green color, but also yellow, pink, and white. It is a silicate of aluminium and glucinum (beryllium). The aquamarine is a transparent, sea-green variety used as a gem. The emerald is another variety highly prized in jewelry, and distinguished by its deep color, which is probably due to the presence of a little oxide of chromium.

Beryl (n.) The chief source of beryllium; colored transparent varieties are valued as gems.

Beryl () The rendering in the Authorized Version of the Hebrew word _tarshish_, a precious stone; probably so called as being brought from Tarshish. It was one of the stones on the breastplate of the high priest (Ex. 28:20; R.V. marg., "chalcedony;" 39:13). The colour of the wheels in Ezekiel's vision was as the colour of a beryl stone (1:16; 10:9; R.V., "stone of Tarshish"). It is mentioned in Cant. 5:14; Dan. 10:6; Rev. 21:20. In Ezek. 28:13 the LXX. render the word by "chrysolite," which the Jewish historian Josephus regards as its proper translation. This also is the rendering given in the Authorized Version in the margin. That was a gold-coloured gem, the topaz of ancient authors.
